Humminbird 596c HD DI is a brand new offering for 2011 and is the top of the line model in this series. The unit boasts a Best in Class full color display that is 5 inches wide with a 640x640 pixel resolution. Selectable background colors allow users to produce an image that best matches their viewing preferences. These views are provided by the Dual Beam Plus Sonar technology that is standard on all of Humminbird's sonar and combo models. The dual beam sonar signal in concert with the proprietary Sonar Echo Enhancement provides industry leading detail and precision for today's technology embracing anglers.
Many of the most sophisticated features of the Humminbird 596c are software driven. The selective Fish ID is capable of positively identifying fish and distinguishing them from other non-essential underwater items. But Humminbird also knows when software can sometimes get in the way. Enter Truearch technology. Humminbird uses Truearch to alert the user when a suspended target enters or leaves a sonar beam. Many other manufactures use post-processing software to accomplish this, but it can slow down performance. Truearch uses parallel processing to provide arch images that are clean and without noise. In this way users can quickly discern size and depth of their fish targets.
The Humminbird 596c HD DI is a sonar only unit. Users may want to make note that this is not a navigational device as it does not have built in GPS. Deciding later on that GPS navigation is needed would not necessitate the purchase of a sonar/GPS combo unit. Humminbird offers several options in this situation. The AS GR-50 is an external 50- channel GPS receiver that offers extremely accurate location to within 2.5 meters and can be permanently mounted. Another solution would be to connect a handheld GPS device to the 596c via Humminbird's adapter device. In either case, users can rest assured that they will not outgrow the 596c anytime soon.

I went back and forth between this and the Lowrance unit. I am so glad I chose the Humminbird. The Lowrance unit does not have the color graph, and that makes a big difference.
The clarity of this unit is unreal. I can count the leaves on a stem of milfoil. However, in DI mode, it does not mark fish well. That is where the graphing comes in. Shows the fish very clear there. Set in split screen and you have the best of both worlds.
The unit will act up in shallow (2ft) of water if there is a lot of vegetation. But most units I have had will do this. Besides, do you really need a graph in 2 ft of water? haha
I do have the transducer mounted on the transom. I have heard of some issues with trolling motor mounts, but I have also heard good things, so i am still undecided. I plan on purchasing a 2nd unit that will be mounted on the trolling motor. Will follow up when I have tested that out.
Long story short....You will not believe what you have missed over the years once you hook one of these units up.
